Project Management

We all still need help from time to time, no matter how experienced.

To stop thinking, is to lose the edge of the rock hard software professional.

Hopefully we can use this site to collaborate in a straight-forward way, with the ultimate aim of promoting real world approaches to software development that work. And have some fun on the way ...

As of 1st November 2007, we have just started on the path ... we'll keep going, join us if you can! We'll do our best to stick with the program (!).

Help us to help you, ourselves and others.

Extreme Prototyping

The more you research Software Project Management across the internet or through more traditional means, the more confusing it can become. People new to Software Project Management find it difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff. This is not surprising as software methods and project process recommendations can often contradict each other, especially out of context within real life situations.

Even Software Project Managers with much experience can often forget the basics of project success. Perhaps when faced with a different type of software project that they are used to. Or maybe they just need somewhere to go to inspire or reinforce initial project planning thoughts.

RockHardProjects.com is maintained by Software Project Managers with decades of hard earned project management experience gained in FTSE 100 companies.

Its intention is to cut through the confusion, get back to basics when necessary and explore the more academic side of the software team profession in a clear concise way.

We hope this website will cater for all experience levels.

Software Project Management Fundamentals

A software project manager was out walking in the countryside one day when a frog called out to him - "If you kiss me I shall turn back into a beautiful princess, and I'll stay with you for a week as your companion."

The software project manager smiled at the frog and put it into his pocket. The frog insisted, "If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess, I'll stay with you for as long as you wish and do absolutely anything that you want.

The software project manager took the frog out of his pocket, smiled at it and put it back.

Finally, the frog demanded, "What's the matter? You can turn me back into a beautiful princess, and I'll stay with you for ever and do anything you want. Why won't you kiss me?" to which the software project manager replied,

"Hey, I'm a software project manager,. I simply don't have time for a girlfriend, but a talking frog ....... that's cool."

50% of people think the "glass is half full". The other 50% think the "glass is half empty". The software project manager thinks the "glass is twice as big as it needs to be".

Failure is not an option. It comes packaged with the software.

"Computers in the future will weigh no more than 1.5 tons." (Popular Mechanics 1949).

"I think there's a world market for maybe five computers." (Chairman of IBM, 1943).

"I have traveled the length and breadth of this country and talked with the best people, and I can assure you that data processing is a fad that won't last out the year." (1957).

"But what is it good for?" (Engineer of IBM, commenting on the micro chip, 1968).

"There is no reason why anyone would want to have a computer in their home." (Chairman of DEC,1977).

A clergyman, a doctor and a software project manager were playing golf together one day and were waiting for a particularly slow group ahead.

The software project manager exclaimed, "What's with these people? We've been waiting over half and hour! It's a complete disgrace, we're getting behind schedule."

The doctor agreed, "They're hopeless, I've never seen such a rabble on a golf course."

The clergyman spotted the approaching golf pro and asked him what was going on, "What's happening with that group ahead of us? They're surely too slow and useless to be playing, aren't they?"

The golf pro replied, "Oh, yes, that's a group of blind fire-fighters. They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last year, so we always let them play for free anytime."

The three golfers fell silent for a moment.

The clergyman said, "Oh dear, that's so sad. I shall say some special prayers for them tonight."

The doctor added, rather meekly, "That's a good thought. I'll get in touch with an ophthalmic surgeon friend of mine to see if there's anything that can be done for them."

After pondering the situation for a few seconds, the software project manager turned to the golf pro and asked, "Why can't they play at night?"
